Based in Boise, ID, the Winter Wildlands Alliance bills itself an alliance of over 100 environmental organizations. Its Montana members include: Beartooth Recreational Trails Association, Montana Backcountry Alliance, and the Montana Wilderness Association. In 2010, WWA joined in a lawsuit with the Sierra Club, Wolf Recovery Project, and the Wilderness Society against the USDA to try to stop the agency from darting and tagging wolves in wilderness areas. Testimony revealed that WWA only had 1,300 members. WWA has received over $3.5 million from foundations. Top funders include the Turner Foundation ($1.2 million), run by wealthy environmentalist Ted Turner; the Wyss Foundation ($600,000), funded by foreign billionaire Hansjorg Wyss; and liberal Patagonia foundation.
